Biographical / Historical
Les Levine (b. 1935, Dublin, Ireland) is a multidisciplinary artist, known for his theoretical approach and innovative public works across New York City. Levine works primarily within the mediums of communication media and installation, in institutional art spaces as well as alternative public venues, such as subway cars, and billboards.
Levine attended London's Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied design, before relocating to Canada in 1958, and pursuing further study at the New School of Art in Toronto. In 1964, The artist moved to New York City to pursue an art career.
Levine's first solo exhibition, shown in 1966 at New York's Fischbach Gallery, established Levine within the conceptual and minimalist canon that was nearing its peak in mid 1960's New York City, and introduced the artist's concept of "disposable art." "Disposables" were sculptures made of Eastman brand plastic sheets, which Levine sold for $3 - $6 each. "People like to think that art is forever," Levine said, interviewed following his 2017 retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada. "But it has a lifespan like anything else." (1)
Levine was among the first artists to adopt television as an artistic medium. The artist's video works could be considered into two categories: performances, like his films "Diamond Mind," "Einstein," and 'quasi-documents,' "Anxiety, Religion and God," where "the camera is like a notebook."
In 1970, Levine founded the Museum of Mott Art Inc. on 181 Mott St., Manhattan: "in the heart of Manhattan's Chinese and Italian communities." A conceptual art museum, and personal project of Levine's, the museum provided resources to artists, often in the form of small publications, featuring tongue-in-cheek lists of "artist services." The museum also supported the production of artists' publications and books.
Throughout the mid to late 1980s/ early 90s Levine explored the public form of billboard installations in his campaigns: "Ease Pain" (1992), a billboard campaign executed throughout the lower region of Manhattan, "Imitate Touch" (1990) and "Not Guilty" (1990). "We Are Not Afraid" (1982), a New York City subway project, was widely distributed in highly visible locations on three major subway lines across New York. The project was intended to activate a "passive sense of anxiety in a viewer," (2) and placed an investigative spotlight on the religious war, or, the Troubles, of Northern Ireland– a subject matter that is frequently present in Levine's work.
Les Levine has been an artist in residence at the University of Illinois (in 1975),and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia (1973). The artist has taught at various academic institutions, including New York University, where he taught video and communications theory. Levine received a CAPS Video Award (1979), and was twice a recipient of National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1974, 1980). Levine has been the subject of over 100 solo exhibitions, including, "Les Levine: Ressurection 1972-2016", Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (2019); "Les Levine: Bio-Tech Rehearsals, 1965-1975," Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery, Columbia University, NY, NY (2016); "Les Levine: Media Projects and Archive," Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (2015); "Media Mind - Les Levine: A Recent Survey," The Alternative Museum, NY, NY (1996); "All Star Cast (A Place)," (1967), at The Walker Art Center, "Slip Cover," (1966), at the Art Gallery of Toronto, and "Disposables" (1967), at the Isaac's Gallery. Levine has had his work featured in a number of group shows including Documenta 6 (Kassel, West Germany), and Documenta 8, and the 2001 Venice Biennale.
Throughout his career, Les Levine has collaborated with writers and artists including Jack Burnham, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Jill Johnston.

Scope and Contents
The Les Levine Collection of Publications and Ephemera contains 144 items organized into 10 categories by form. This includes postcards and invitations to a select few exhibitions from over 100 in total in which Levine has taken part. Installation views, various books and catalogs, Levine's own writing, pamphlets, photographs, and flyers make-up the remainder of the collection.
Spanning across nearly 60 years, the collection's material generally focuses on the artist's mass media campaigns, mail art, and publications correlated to The Museum of Mott Art Inc.
The collection also contains one 12 inch LP and two DVDs, stored separately in an oversized container. These audiovisual components contain a 1 hour and 38 minute long recorded interview of Les Levine by Willoughby Sharp, a video installation piece capturing the artist in a recognized setting of his mass media installations; the New York City Subway. On LP, documentation of Levine's installation piece, "Game Room: A Tribute to the Great American Loser" (1976), and "Watergate Fashions" (1973).
