Biographical / Historical

Silvia Kolbowski (born 1953, Buenos Aires, Argentina), is an Argentine-born American artist, writer, and educator. Kolbowski's work encompasses multiple time-based media and photography, and addresses questions of historicization, political resistance, and the unconscious. Since the 1980s, a central concern in her work has been the structures of spectatorship – psychical and political. Kolbowski attended Franconia College, a small experimental school in New Hampshire, where she earned an associate degree in 1974. She went on to study art and earn her B.S. from Hunter College, graduating magna cum laude in 1980. She was a fellow at The Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies from 1980 until 1983.

At Hunter, Kolbowski turned to modes of conceptual art practice to address topics like sexuality and difference. In her first major series, "Model Pleasure I - VIII" (1982-1984), and throughout the early 1980s, "Kolbowski," writes curator Ruth Erickson, "used appropriation and photography to launch a psychoanalytically informed critique of representation, especially the mass media's construction of women for the pleasure of the male gaze." Soon, the artist began extending her "analysis of display, consumption, and power, to address institutions of art". Her recent work continues to be in dialogue with history while exploring political issues and ethical anxieties of the current moment. Major works by the artist include "Closed Circuit" (1994), "an inadequate history of conceptual art" (1998/1999), "Proximity to Power American Style" (2003/2004), "After Hiroshima Mon Amour" (2008), "After Atlas" (1996-2009), and "A Few Howls Again?" (2010).

From the late 1980s to early 2000s, Kolbowski was represented by Postmasters Gallery in New York City, Colin de Land's American Fine Arts, Co. in New York City, and Galerie Roger Pailhas in Paris. Kolbowski has had solo exhibitions at Postmasters Gallery, New York; American Fine Arts, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Center for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; Secession, Vienna; LAX ART; among other locations. Her works have been exhibited in many international venues and contexts, including The Taipei Biennial, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei (2010); Villa Arson, Nice (2010); The Whitney Biennial, The Whitney Museum, New York (2000); and The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2014).. She has also worked collaboratively – notably with the architect Peter Eisenman, the artist Walid Raad, and the curator Miwon Kwon – and has incorporated correspondence with colleagues into her visual art and print publications, such as  Between Artists (A.R.T Press 2006). For a full exhibition history, please consult Kolbowski's  website.

Kolbowski was on the advisory board of October journal from 2000-2020, where she was also a co-editor from 1993 -2000. She also served on the advisory board of the journal Filip from 2007-2010. She has taught at The Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, the CCC program of the Ecole Superiéure d'Art Visuel in Geneva, the Architecture Department of The New School's Parsons School of Design, and the School of Art at The Cooper Union. She has lectured widely and internationally, and her writings and projects have been published in numerous publications including: Artforum, Texte zur Kunst, Documents, Parachute, Filip, October, Art Journal, Acme Magazine, Lacanian Ink, X-tra and Afterimage. Her blog, an extension of her art practice, was funded by the Creative Capital Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program in 2014. She is based in London, where she lives with her husband, the architectural historian Kenneth Frampton.
